Hi there, just registered here after seeing a post of DarkElf's over on the ElderScrolls forums on this thread: http://www.elderscrolls.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=2808306&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1

You mentioned that if the person posting could provide a decent size DEM file for Great Britain that you could "crank out the landmass for you with some very basic terrain texturing." What I was wondering is if you could and would be willing to do this for Japan? not sure exactly what you need (I am not much of a "map person") but have been doing some searches for DEM's for Japan and was wondering if you could have a look at a couple of resources and tell me what you would need, obviously doing this for fun so I am not looking to spend thousands of dollars (as a site http://www.mapmart.com originally quoted me) I would be willing I figure to spend some if it was necessary to get what was needed but as it is just a fun project not a fortune. The site I just mentioned seems like a good resource in fact they mentioned they had "Terragen" formatted files available and you mentioned that you used that program just they had like a million and a half different "packages" available and was not sure what you would need also there is a geographical organization (http://www.gsi.go.jp/ENGLISH/) that seems to have something available but I don't know what to look for, anyway if you can help me out let me know! Not sure but would the image at: http://www.mapmart.com/DEM/Countries/Japan.htm be enough or is it not large enough? Thanks!

Mapmart has some very nice stuff.  The DEM selection is great but I suppose "you get what you pay for".  Terragen formatted maps are easiest to work with in Morrowind but DEMs will work too.

As far as image resolution goes you probably want to find something at least 4k by 4k pixels to maintain as much accuracy as possible.  I recently expanded my ME map from 9.3k x 8k to 12k x 12k simply because I wasn't completely happy with the concessions I was having to make on accuracy.

One suggestion I have is to possibly keep looking for obscure DEM versions of Japan that may already be available on the net.  A while ago I did stumble across a site that had miscellaneous DEMs available for free download but I failed to bookmark the site.

EDIT:  Here's the site, http://ngdc.noaa.gov/seg/topo/gltiles.shtml.  They aren't the best elevation maps considering they only have approx. 20 distinct shades of detail but it gives you a decent sized map onwhich to base your work.
